A new xylariaceous fungus, Xylaria fanjingensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated from the subtropical forest of Guizhou Province, southern China. The new species is characterized by small, sessile, subglobose stromata attached to the substrate by a narrow connective, the ascal apical ring staining light rust or rust in Melzer’s iodine reagent, and the ascospores (37.5)38–44.5(46.5) × 18–20 µm. Another penzigioid Xylaria species, X. cf. berteri is reported in China for the first time.
