Summary

Christensen K. I. & Talent N. 2012. Crataegus laevigata or C. levigata (Rosaceae) – a palaeographic analysis. – Phyton (Horn, Austria) 52 (2): 195–201, with 7 figures.

We have carefully considered the contention of Gutermann 2011 that „levigata“ should be the correct spelling of the species epithet of the plant generally known as Crataegus laevigata (Poir.) DC. (Rosaceae). Consideration of a little more context (i. e., the whole volume of Lamarck’s Encyclopédie) makes it clear that the grapheme used in the typeface of the original description is not an e as Gutermann contends, but an ae ligature (æ), and therefore the usual spelling should be maintained.
